Some stages of healing are easier to put into words than others. Stage Nine is one of the harder ones. It moves away from what you can easily see or measure and into something more personal: how aware you are of being here, in your body, in your relationships, and in your life.
This is Part 9 of our 12-part series, “Understanding the Stages of Healing.”
First, Where Did We Leave Off?
In Stage Eight, Emptiness in Connectedness, we talked about the space that can appear after something has been released or resolved. That space doesn’t necessarily need to be filled right away. There can be value in simply noticing it.
Maybe there’s gratitude there. Maybe vulnerability. Maybe you feel more open than you did before.
Stage Nine begins in that space.
Looking Beyond What You Can See
Light Behind the Form is an unusual name, and it’s meant to describe an experience that can be just as difficult to define.
Think about the difference between going through the motions of your day and really noticing yourself in it. Your breath. The way you move. Your energy.
The feeling of being fully present for a conversation instead of already thinking about the next thing.
These are small things, but they can feel different when you actually notice them.
Stage Nine invites you to pay attention to the experience behind the physical form, rather than concentrating only on what your body is doing. There’s nothing you need to force, achieve, or get “right.” It’s more about noticing what becomes apparent when you give it your attention.
When Other People Feel a Little Closer
That awareness doesn’t stop with you. You may find yourself listening differently or appreciating an ordinary moment with someone more than you normally would.
Not every interaction becomes meaningful or profound, of course. Sometimes it’s simply being there without rushing ahead mentally. A conversation. A shared laugh. Sitting quietly with someone you care about.
That sense of connection is part of Stage Nine, too.
Next Up: Stage Ten
Stage Nine asks us to notice what exists beneath the busyness and physical details of everyday life. Stage Ten takes that idea further, moving from personal awareness into another layer of connection.
We’ll explore that next in Part 10.
